Bring in the Light

A double-height atrium was the key component to the redevelopment of the Ottawa Hospital’s Critical Care Wing at its General Campus. Conceived as a connective element within the overall design plan, its generous glazing and transparency turned the typical hospital plan “inside out”. The patient corridors and public corridors inhabit the same volume within the atrium, creating a dynamic atmosphere featuring both the play of light and movement. The project included a new state-of-the art 32 Bed ICU, Surgical Suite with 17 Integrated OR’s, PACU (Recovery), SPD plus staff and support spaces.
